The UN Human Rights Committee links freedom of expression with transparency and accountability and describes a free, uncensored media environment as important to public life. The strongest reason for independent media is therefore not that dissident outlets are inherently truthful.
Its value is plural verification: competing institutions can inspect claims, preserve records, expose omissions and correct one another. Counterpower becomes more credible when its own media can publish evidence that embarrasses the counterpower.
